Many college students are unaware just how many stores and restaurants offer discounts for customers who present a college ID and how much they can save by doing so.

College students are constantly on the look out to save a little extra money. After the price of tuition and school books, it's hard to find any extra change for shopping. What many students don't consider is the extra cash they can save from using their student discount. While many restaurants offer discounts for those in college, they're only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to great savings.

Restaurants That Offer Student Discounts

Prices for on-campus food are much higher than they would be off campus, and students don't get a discount when making a purchase. A burger and fries can cost anywhere from $2 to $5 more than it would at the same restaurant not affiliated with the college campus.

Fast Food Chains that May Offer Discounts:

  • Burger King
  • Hardee's
  • CiCi's Pizza
  • Buffalo Wild Wings

Instead of chowing down at the campus cafeteria, choose an off-campus restaurant like Burger Kingand ask about their student discount. Several fast food chains offer discounts up to 10% when a students presents his student ID at the register. Fancier restaurants also offer discounts and all that extra money saved can go towards groceries and snacks for long days on campus.

Receive Student Discounts on Clothing, Accessories, and Haircuts

In the world of fashion, finding cheap clothing and shoes is like looking for treasure with no map. Students may be surprised to learn their favorite store offer college students a discount on their purchases. Ask the cashier about a discount on every visit to a new store. If the store doesn't offer one, consider looking around for a store that does.

Hair salons and stylists, from the cheap quick-cut places such as Great Clips to the professionals, also offer a nice discount. With the cheaper price a student can choose extra options such as having their hair shampooed before the cut. If the discount is 10% or higher, it's essentially like skipping the sales tax.

College Students Get a Discounts on Electronics

With technology on the rise, it's crucial to have a computer for typing papers and taking notes on. Cell phones are not only for social communications like texting, but they offer a cheaper, portable alternative to a land line phone. Electronics stores like Best Buy know this and want to give students the best deal they can on computers and software such as Microsoft Office. Combined with constant sales on computers and gadgets, asking for a student discount can shave even more off an expensive price tag.

Finding Other Stores That Offer Discounts

Regardless of whether or not the store chooses to advertise it, student discounts are quite common. Students can save money on food, clothing purchases, haircuts, and even a new laptop for taking notes in class. A handful of other stores may offer discounts as well.

Students should always ask before making a purchase to see what type, if any, of discount is offered. Even stores that don't offer a student discount may offer a small discount or mention a current sale's price to the diligent college student who asks. Over time these savings add up and all that extra money can go toward textbooks and other much needed school supplies.
